A clean bench—also known as a laminar flow clean bench—is a specialized piece of laboratory equipment designed to provide a particle-free working environment for non-hazardous operations. It delivers a continuous stream of HEPA-filtered air across the work zone, effectively protecting samples, instruments, and processes from contamination. Clean benches are widely used in electronics manufacturing, medical laboratories, pharmaceutical research, precision assembly, and other environments that require high levels of cleanliness.
A clean bench operates using three key components:
Ambient air is first drawn into the unit through a pre-filter, which removes larger dust particles. This protects the HEPA filter and extends its service life.
The filtered air then passes through a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter, typically rated at H13 or H14, with filtration efficiency up to 99.99% at 0.3 microns.
This ensures that the airflow entering the work area is ULTRA-clean.
The clean air is delivered in a uniform laminar flow, either vertically downward or horizontally outward, depending on the bench design.
This steady airflow pushes particles away from the workspace, preventing contamination of sensitive samples.
Clean benches are generally classified into two types:
Air flows downward from a top-mounted HEPA filter
Offers better protection against falling contaminants
Suitable for microbiology, electronics assembly, and sterile handling
More comfortable for long operations
Air flows horizontally from the back toward the operator
Ensures stable airflow across the work surface

Note: Clean benches protect the product, but do not protect the operator from hazardous aerosols or chemicals. For hazardous materials, a biosafety cabinet should be used instead.
